Thinking Like a Kid

There is great joy in the act of returning to materials from childhood. The slickness of finger paints, the tacky sound of a crayon and the dust of chalk feel so fundamental to me. In using those materials, there is no judgment and just making and exploring.

Most of the time when I attempt to make something halfway beautiful out of these materials, it ends up looking about like it did twenty-five years ago, when my coordination was like that of a goofy puppy. So the piles of these little experiments either take me to a conceptual revelation, or are scanned for textural use, or they end up in the recycle bin. When the freedom of working with unrefined materials hands me something that might take me in a new direction, it gets neatly taped into a sketchbook with the other project documents.
